Well I finally sat down today and wrote the tutorial. It's my first, so please, please let me know what you think - constructive criticism is warmly invited!
Especially let me know if you're having any problems following my instructions. I'd hate to think a child out there was being deprived of letting their artistic ability run wild all because mama couldn't work out how to make that Art Satchel!
Seriously though I think it is a pretty straight forward, simple pattern. Give it a go, and when you're finished contact me and share the results - I'd really love to see your version :)

"They are fantastic Fran! Well done. I've seen a lot of those art rolls but I think yours is the best designed. The girls look so chuffed!!"
and
Tania from Myrtle and Eunice
"Way. To. Go!
Fran - these are FANTABULOUS! They would work so much better for my kids than the rolls we have - especially with the sketchbook packed away with the crayons. Genius. Genius, I say!"
Congratulations lovely ladies and a big thank you to all of you who entered.

These are awesome Fran. What a great idea. You are very clever. And well done for all the time and thought you put into the tutorial.
ReplyDeleteOh I like the satchel. I saw Cams roll up one which would be great for older kids. This would be great for my under 5's who insist on taking their drawing books with them... Thank You Thank You Thank You... I am adding to my to do list on my blog...

Awesome tutorial! I know a few 4 & 5 year olds that will be very excited.
ReplyDeleteGreat tutorial. Have an idea for an 'in-your-handbag-for-the-kids-when-they-need-it' version, but I love the idea that whenever the kids go out they should and can take their own. Now to finish a couple of other things so I can get the sewing machine out...
ReplyDeleteThank you for the fab tutorial.
ReplyDeletewow, saw this on Tania's & thought..maybe, just maybe I can have a go at it..
ReplyDeleteLet me think about it some more (sewing challenged here), very nice indeed!!!

Thank you for the tute, what a fabulous idea. My almost 4 year old would love one of these - it is a bag, and it contains drawing equipment - she would be in heaven. I will have to give it a try for her. Thanks again, Cat
ReplyDeleteFound you on Tania's blog too.Great, thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for sharing Fran - it was perfect timing. I just made one for a little 2yr old friend for his birthday instead of the pencil roll I would have done. Now one for my 2.5yr old! Great tute, simple and fast.
ReplyDeleteThis is so awesome - I was going to make crayon rolls for my boys but these would be much better for heading out and about :)
ReplyDeletewow...lovely tutorial
ReplyDeleteSo cute and beautiful fabric choice.
ReplyDeleteLove your how to!!! Awesome fabric!
ReplyDeleteThis is really lovely. What a great idea.
ReplyDeleteThat's so cute - I teach needlework to children and we've done a few variations on this theme with jewellery rolls, or knitting needle cases - but I love the idea of making it into a bag to carry about. THANKS!
ReplyDeleteI am so excited to make this today for my 5 year old to take a on a trip tomorrow. This might be a silly question, but I don't understand why two 45 inch pieces of fabric are cut for the strap if it will then be cut down to 30 inches. I think I must not be understanding the instructions. Did I miss something? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHi Clan Hill. I tried to email you directly but couldn't access your profile details....
ReplyDeleteI'm excited that you're excited about making the on-the-go art satchel!!
No question is a silly question, I'm glad you asked.
In the tutorial I used fabric pre-cut into fat quarter's, so it was easiest to just cut two 3 1/2 inch strips which measure approx 45" long, then join them and trim them down to 30". If you're not using fat quarter's just go ahead and cut a 30" strip.
Hope this has cleared things up :)
Happy Sewing!!
yes, makes perfect sense! I made it about two weeks ago before we left for the beach and my daughter has taken it EVERYWHERE! It's awesome and was so easy to make. I love how your instructions had step by step photos because I'm a very visual person. Thank you so much for posting this!
